What size warehouse building do I need?

The right warehouse size depends on your stock volume, storage and handling methods, vehicle access, workflow, and allowance for future expansion. There is no standard warehouse size that suits every operation. The correct specification is the smallest practical building that accommodates maximum stock, storage equipment, working areas, building services and statutory requirements without compromising safe movement or day-to-day use.

Start with an inventory schedule rather than an estimated floor area. Record the dimensions, weight and storage method for each product or material, then identify the greatest quantity that may need to be held at one time. Include seasonal peaks, incoming goods awaiting inspection, picked orders, returns, damaged stock and items kept separately for quality or safety reasons. This prevents the building being sized only around average stock levels.

Storage equipment has a major effect on the required footprint. A warehouse using floor stacking will have a different plan from one using pallet racking, shelving, cantilever racks or specialist storage frames. For each system, allow for:

A higher building can increase storage capacity, but only where the racking, equipment and operating procedures are suitable for that height.

Building proportions also influence efficiency. A long, narrow plan may create unnecessary travel between storage and dispatch areas, while a very wide plan can require additional equipment or circulation space to reach the centre. The most suitable length-to-width arrangement depends on the storage layout, structural span, handling method and the position of internal zones. Allowances for compliance should be identified at the design stage.
